Answer: Concrete
Explanation: Properly placed and finished concrete tends to last the longest (or wear the slowest), but that's really the wrong question. The design life and maintenance cycle of a driveway depends as much on the subgrade as the surface course itself. There are paver and cobble stone roads in service in europe today that are older than any American infrastructure, and in better repair. The driveway design needs to reflect the conditions that exist, and will continue to exist below it. Sometimes that means that subgrade reinforcement is the best plan. Other times it means that a thicker surface course, or additional reinforcing or flexural strength efforts are needed. Pavers last a long time because as a surface course they are flexible, which minimizes random cracking, which minimizes raveling, which ultimately leads to the need for repair or replacement in asphalt or concrete surfaces. Proper subgrade prep, mix design, reinforcement, and joint design can produce a concrete driveway that will perform on par with any other design.

Explanation: Concrete is like the human body. Concrete gets harder every day after it is poured and reaches it's strongest peak at the age of 60. Then it starts to age and degenerate, chemically making it weaker every day. Similar to the human body!

ProMatcher
Answer: Concrete
Explanation: Concrete will last longer than anything in most cases as long as the concrete was installed properly. The sub-grade needs to be fine graded and compacted throughout the entire area where concrete will be poured. Rebar reinforcement is something we strongly recommend and use on nearly all our jobs. We usually will install rebar on 36" centers each way and then tie it all together. It depends on what the concrete will be used for to determine the spacing in between the rebar. Once the concrete is poured, it will need to have expansion joints or control joints installed every 12' each way to create the weakest point in the concrete. This is basically a controlled crack that runs below the joint and won;t ever be noticed. This is one of the most important things about concrete that is often skipped due to poor quality worksmanship.
Hovarth Concrete Construction
Answer: Concrete
Explanation: Properly installed concrete driveways are far superior. Please note that properly installed driveways MUST contain all of the following to insure longevity: 1. Compacted sub base (4" minimum). 2. Rebar reinforcement (Several times per month I hear that people have received estimates for new driveways and the estimator says fiber is sufficient. ITS NOT! If its going to be driven on, please include fiber and rebar (2' on center). 3. Control Joints placed at a maximum of 144 square feet. (12'x12' grid). 4. Expansion Joints. If your new driveway is going to touch other concrete, block, brick or wood a proper expansion joint needs to seperate the different material surfaces. 5. Low water to cement ratio. Do not allow the finishers to put additional water in the Ready Mix truck when it arrives. Most likely, the concrete is batched and delivered for optimum performance.
