Driveways: Asphalt vs Concrete
By ProMatcher Staff
Types of Driveways
There are two main types of driveways: asphalt and concrete. Asphalt driveways are almost always less expensive, but concrete driveways are incredibly durable and require minimal maintenance. Here are some things you should consider before hiring a contractor to install or replace your driveway.
Asphalt Driveways
The Good:
• Affordable • Easy to install • Repairs are simple • Will not be damaged by cold temperatures • Hides stains well • Can be driven on the day after install
The Bad:
• Requires more maintenance than concrete • Must be installed in the summer • Needs to be sealed periodically • May sag or crack • No color options
The Bottom Line:
Asphalt is a relatively durable and very affordable alternative to concrete. When properly maintained, an asphalt driveway can last 20-30 years. Over time, asphalt driveways have a tendency to crack or sag, but repairs can be made with ease. If you live in a colder climate, you can rest easy knowing the freezing temperatures will not damage your driveway.
Concrete Driveways
The Good:
• Durable, long-lasting • Very low maintenance • Can be installed in cold weather • Lot of design options; can be colored or stamped • Thrives in warmer climates
The Bad:
• Expensive • Longer installation process • Will show every stain • Difficult to hide repairs • Must wait a week to drive on it
The Bottom Line:
Concrete driveways, when properly maintained, can easily last over 30 years; however, the initial investment is steep. Concrete driveways are built to last and require little to no maintenance in most cases. It can be stamped to replicate the look of a more expensive stone or brick driveway, and concrete can be dyed a variety of colors. Unfortunately, when repairs do need to be made, they are nearly impossible to hide and every stain or imperfection will be quite noticeable.
